Acquired by Brazil’s second largest construction company Gafisa in 2008, the dominant low income housing developer in the country Tenda have run into difficulties in maintaining the projects on their books – with an estimated one third of the company´s entire stock under construction having difficulty in moving forward.

Research released by the Brazilian Association of Construction Materials (ABRAMAT) has indicated that the number of companies intending to invest in expansion over the next 12 months has decreased to 69 percent, compared to 75 percent in the same period last year.

Statistics released by the Housing Syndicate of São Paulo (SindusCon-SP) pointed to the formation of 86,100 new jobs in the Brazilian construction industry in quarter one of 2011 – with the total reaching 2.92 million. Yet, whilst January and February 2011 saw a rise in construction employment activity by 80,900 new positions, by March the widely predicted slowdown was witnessed with 5,200 jobs in the industry being created.

A blog post on the construction authorisation measures being undertaken by the Caixa Econômica Federal – the dominant house lender in Brazil and main administrator of the low income subsidy programme ‘Minha Casa, Minha Vida’ (‘My House, My Life’). The requirements have emerged on the back of increasing reports of loans being granted on the back of irregular real estate developments.
