Recent data released by the Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Departamento Intersindical de Estatística e Estudos Socioeconômicos) has reported Brazil´s real estate construction sector has the highest turnover rate of all industry.  In 2009, 86.2 percent of construction sector employees were discharged from work (excluding retirees, death or voluntary departures).  The construction industry has maintained this position since the measurement was started in 2001 although decreased from the previous years’ figure of 92.2 percent.

It is argued, however, that most employment contracts in the sector are project based and therefore time limited – according to Haruo Ishikawa, vice president capital-work relations at the São Paulo State Construction Industry Syndicate, speaking to the PINI magazine: “builders often fail to accommodate workers in other project plans when the job ends.”
