Statistics released by the Housing Syndicate of São Paulo (SindusCon-SP) pointed to the formation of 86,100 new jobs in the Brazilian construction industry in quarter one of 2011 – with the total reaching 2.92 million.   Yet, whilst January and February 2011 saw a rise in construction employment activity by 80,900 new positions, by March the widely predicted slowdown was witnessed with 5,200 jobs in the industry being created.

The largest concentration of construction workers was found in the South East (approximately 1.5 million in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais); 610,000 in the North East; 407,000 in the South; 220,000 in the Central West and 173,000 in the North.

According to president of SindusCon-SP Sergio Watanabe, despite further drops to be expected, Brazilian construction industry GDP should grow between 5 and 6 percent this year.
